Salt Lake City, Utah-Great Salt Lake

One of the most picturesque sites in Salt Lake City is the Great Salt Lake and its 9 islands. This indeed is one of the most asked about tourist destinations.
The Great Salt Lake is a remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville, a pre-historic body of water which covered some 20,000 square miles of land in what is now Utah, Nevada and Idaho The lake is landlocked and is quite salty, much like the Dead Sea. The Great Salt Lake is the largest lake between the Pacific Ocean and the Great Lakes, and it’s the largest Salt Water lake in the Western Hemisphere.

Sailing and Water Sports on the Great Salt Lake

Sailing is a frequent and popular past time on the lake and there are full time marinas located on Antelope Island (in the middle of the Great Salt Lake) and the Salt Lake State Marina on the south east shore.
Although the lake is beautiful (sometimes on a cloudy day you can’t tell where the sky ends and the Great Salt Lake begins), the lake is really quite shallow and when the wind kicks up, the waves can be dangerous, so if you are sailing, kayaking, or riding a wave runner or other motorized craft, be careful…the Great Salt Lake can be a treacherous lady.

The Great Salt Lake Offers Other Activities as Well

Antelope Island in the center of the Great Salt Lake, is teeming with activity . The Bear River Bird Refuge and Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area and the lake’s marshes attract large gatherings of migratory birds. Some duck and goose hunting is allowed in certain areas, and although we are not hunters, we hear its pretty good!
Hiking and mountain biking are popular on Antelope Island, and there are some excellent trails.  There are also areas ♦Great Salt Lake-Salt Airefor picnicking and camping at Antelope Island State Park and Great Salt Lake State Park.
